Last summer, I took a five-week UNC online art class. Not only did I give my all to each project, but most projects had multiple parts. Then, I had to take each one a step further: take multiple shots of each project and edit every photo. The photos were how I had to submit my work.
The last week and a half of the class overlapped with my first week and a half of au pairing in Madrid. So, for that week and a half, after my long weekdays of au pairing from 9am-4pm, I was working on art projects in my room.
Now I told you in my previous suitcase posts that two summers ago, when I went to Spain for the first time, my suitcase was 17 pounds overweight (a whopping 67 pounds, but hey, I felt like it was an accomplishment to get the “heavy; put your back into it” tag on my suitcase handle). I told myself (correction, my parents told me) that if I ever went back, I was not allowed to bring a suitcase over the weight limit, mainly so they wouldn’t have to pay the overage fee.
But having to finish an art class in Spain meant packing a variety of art supplies — paintbrushes, painter’s tape, indigo ink, fabrics, textures, colored pencils, Sharpies, and the killer: MAGAZINES.
I feel like you know where this is going, but I’ll say it anyways. In the famous words of Britney Spears, “Oops! . . . I did it again.”
I needed magazines for my collage project. The thick stack of magazines set my checked bag over the limit, weighing in at 68 pounds. You can imagine the look on my parents’ faces. Before I came home, my mom emphasized, “Whatever you do, leave the magazines behind. I don’t want it to be overweight again.”
While the workload was kind of intense and challenging to balance while adjusting to being an au pair, the class was very fun and rewarding because I got to express my creative self through my art and came out the other side with a lot of unique pieces.
